Politics, medicine, and the professions,
– an attack on professional independence?
– Tuesday 11th March 2008
The LCA dinner held on 11th March at the Athenaeum had as its principle guest Lord Falconer, the former Lord Chancellor. Lord Falconer spoke eloquently about “Politics, Medicines and the Profession – an Attack on Professional Independence”. The audience was widely based, including the President of the GMC, several leading barristers and lawyers, representatives from the MDU and MPS as well as many LCA members. There was a heated, but friendly discussion, during which all aspects of this problem of deprofessionalisation of medicine were debated.
The Parliamentary Process – A Physician’s Diagnosis
- Wednesday 28th November
On the 28th November 2007 Dr. Richard Taylor MP spoke at a private LCA dinner. The title of his after dinner speech was "The Parliamentary Process - A Physician's Diagnosis". Dr. Taylor gave a frank and full review of some of the difficulties faced by an MP and particularly an Independent MP trying to move forward the political process. There was quite a lot of intense questioning and discussion about the powers of the Health Select Committee, the role of the profession and changes in medical training. The evening was well attended.
