Code of Practice

It is to be hoped that some agreed form of Code of Practice might solve the many daily disputes that affect all consultants, insurers and patients. There are several bodies currently looking at such Codes. A final draft will be forthcoming and the LCA is now closely involved with its production.

What is also needed is a Code of Practice for insurers to explain the precise terms of the contracts they are offering patients. Some financial journalists are sceptical about this:

"I doubt whether a sales code and the publication of a few guides for consumers will cure the ills of the private medical (insurance) market. It is a bit like sticking a plaster on a haemorrhage"
The Sunday Times, 27 June 1999
